Drawing Day 2: Shading Techniques

Today I read about some basic shading techniques, so here’s what I learned, all wrapped up in a three-minute video. Enjoy!

I learned about these shading techniques from a bunch of sites, but these were the most helpful:

Oh, and be sure to let me know if you’ve seen any other useful sites! My bookmarks are overflowing with links, but I’m always looking for more!

  1. Hey, pretty cool!
All that sphere needs now is a shadow beneath it, and the deal is sealed!

You sound more like an instructor in this video than a student, which more-than-likely, means you’re doing very well at gaining the ability draw, and describe methods/practices with ease!

    Keep up the good work,

  2. Liz,
I haven’t got any good sites to add to your list, as I’ve never gone looking for advice on shading ;)

but I did have a question… what do you use to organize your links? Local favorites list? Or do you use something like del.icio.us or ma.gnolia?

I like them both, because of the tagging and organization available, not to mention sharing ability (send someone to your favorites page wiuth a link to the tag and so forth).

Just another reminder, its built-in to Flock :-P

    Good video, keep it up

  3. Thanks, guys! And yeah, I think I’ll try to work more on shadows today or tomorrow… Somehow I find them to be just a little intimidating.

As for organizing links, I’m really disorganized right now! I have a bunch of random links saved on del.icio.us, more in my favorites folder, and more saved in the ScrapBook plug-in for Firefox (http://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/427/). I still haven’t figured out which works best for me!

  4. Try using art pencils… itll make it a lot easyer for shading. Use real paper not just regular school paper. dont hold your pencil so close to the end of the lead. Also your circle lacks a definate light spot its just kinda shaded all around with white on the very top.

  5. Hi mandeep, thanks for the comments! You saw my videos at school? That’s crazy! Where do you go to school?

Looking back at these videos I made so long ago, I’m a little embarrassed! I really want to make a new version of these, better quality and yes, as NeedHelp said, I definitely need some better pencils, erasers, paper, and of course technique. I’m no artist. =P Just learning.

  6. Ha ha! thanks so much, im so jealous of my brothers drawings (as said in the name xD lol) hes all great at shading, which makes me jealous because i can only make 2-D drawings and when he shades his 2-D drawings, they turn to 3-D and it just makes me so mad! and uve helpd me get better in only a few minutes! x) thank you i’ll keep trying your way and maybe i’ll get my brother, and your, good.

  7. Youre not the average website author, gentleman. You certainly have got some thing effective to include in the web. Your own style is really strong that one could nearly make do with being a bad writer, yet you’re even awesome from indicating everything you must state. Keep the great work man!

  8. hey good website! It’s sad I can’t view it all properly on my phone:( Anyway I came across this site called drawscape..It’s good.. You should check it out:)

  9. I’m not sure why but this web site is loading extremely slow for me. Is anyone else having this problem or is it a issue on my end? I’ll check back later and see if the problem still exists. Thanks a lot!
