I’m Getting a Degree in… (Drum Roll)
“So what do you plan to major in?”
“I have no idea.”
Sometime during high school, everyone started asking about my plans for the future. I never had any. My English teachers always told me to major in comparative literature or creative writing, but I knew I’d want to shoot myself if I took that many English classes! I’d be good at it, but it’s just not my thing.
So what is my thing? I still have no idea, but I have decided on a major. I based my decision on a number of criteria:
- How much I like the subject
- How challenging it would be (I like a good challenge!)
- How many jobs it can be applied to
- If I have a chance of getting accepted into the program (So much for being a theater major…)
In the end, I couldn’t narrow it down to just one subject, so I decided to go for a double major in communications and mathematics.
I picked communications because it’s broad, interesting, and applicable to almost any job. And I picked math precisely because it’s the most challenging subject I could major in while still being able to do a double major in four years.
Now tell me: am I crazy or is this actually a good idea? And to the college students/graduates: What did you major in? How and when did you decide?

Hrmm. Your theory is interesting, although I think it probably appeals to a type of brain/mind that differs quite a bit from my own. Math, although somewhat fun in small, small, smaaaalllllll doses, is quite mundane and maddening to me.
And thus, I am an English major. I love every bit of it.

I’m still learning myself. Go for it!
You can always switch…
I going to major in Physics and Mathematics.
Hawtness. <3
You just don’t get good advice in high school. I didn’t. That is, unless you’re a medical major, law, business, the more common majors.
All my friends are 98% sure what they’re doing. Many are med majors. Only like… 2 business.

Thanks for the feedback!
ColdSoreSuperstar - I never liked math, but I like to think that any subject can be interesting if you go about it the right way. So I guess my other reason for taking math is to see if I’m right or not, lol.
Murasaki no ryuu - Math and physics, wow! Very hawt. How did you decide on that? Are you hoping to have a career in something sciencey?
